One of the places you should not miss if you visit Marrakech is the Jemâa-el-Fna square. People come from all over the world to enjoy its atmosphere, almost unchanged since the XII century. It is the authentic heart of the ochre city. Recently awarded UNESCO Heritage Site status, the Square is home to shops and street restaurants, but also snake charmers, monkey trainers, fortune tellers, and other picturesque characters. An amazing carnival of joy and life in front of your eyes!
Other highlights include the Marrakech Museum, the Ben Youssef Medersa and the Mellah or ancient Jewish quarter, where you can buy traditional clothes, jewellery, or spices, to take home with you as souvenirs. Then, a short visit to the famous Menara gardens and its olive grove for a walk, and a ride on dromedary for a souvenir picture, are a must. Also interesting are the famous Majorelle gardens, owned by Yves St Laurent, and home to an important botanical collection; the popular market in Bab ElKhemiss; and the city’s tanneries.
But your Marrakech experience won’t be complete if you don’t treat yourself to a stay in one the Riads of the ancient medina. Try it!
